How Digipal Signage Works
Understand core Digipal concepts — screens, content, playlists, assigned content, Now Playing, schedules, and overrides.
Overview
Before setting up your first screen, it helps to understand a few basic Digipal terms.
The most important concepts are:
Screen
Content
Playlist
Assigned Content
Now Playing
Schedule
You do not need to memorize them. This guide simply explains how they fit together.
Screen
A Screen represents a Digipal player paired with your account.
The physical display might be:
- a television;
- a commercial display;
- a menu board;
- a kiosk;
- a wayfinding display.
For example:
Front Counter Menu
could be the name of the Digipal Screen controlling a restaurant's main menu display.
Content
Content is something that can be shown on a screen.
Examples can include supported:
- images;
- videos;
- designs;
- web-based content;
- widgets;
- other available content types.
For example:
Weekend Brunch Promotion
could be a single image stored in My Content.
Playlist
A Playlist contains multiple pieces of content that play in sequence.
For example:
Hotel Lobby Playlist
- Welcome Message
- Breakfast Hours
- Spa Promotion
- Conference Schedule
- Local Attractions
Instead of assigning each item separately, the hotel can assign the entire playlist to its lobby screen.
Assigned Content
Assigned Content is what a screen normally plays.
You can think of it as the screen's default content.
Example:
Screen: Hotel Lobby Display
Assigned Content: Hotel Welcome Playlist
As long as nothing temporarily overrides it, this is what the screen normally displays.
Now Playing
Now Playing tells you what currently has control of the screen.
Often, Now Playing is the same as Assigned Content.
However, it can be different when another Digipal feature temporarily overrides the default.
Schedule
A Schedule tells Digipal to display something during a specified time period.
Example:
A restaurant normally displays:
All-Day Menu
but schedules:
Breakfast Menu
from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
During breakfast:
Assigned Content: All-Day Menu
Now Playing: Breakfast Menu
After the schedule ends, the screen returns to its normal Assigned Content.
Overrides
Some Digipal features can temporarily take priority over the screen's default content.
These can include:
- Schedules;
- Broadcasts;
- Smart Triggers;
- other supported override features.
The default assignment remains in place while the override is active.
When the override ends, the screen can return to its normal content.
Two Digipal screen cards: one with an active Schedule override, one playing its Assigned Content by default
Putting It All Together
Consider a fitness centre.
Screen
Gym Entrance Display
Content
- Membership Promotion
- Class Timetable
- Personal Training Offer
- Opening Hours
Playlist
Gym Entrance Playlist
contains all four content items.
Assigned Content
Gym Entrance Playlist
is assigned to the screen.
Schedule
A special:
Holiday Hours
graphic is scheduled for a holiday weekend.
Most of the time, the screen plays the normal playlist.
During the scheduled period, Holiday Hours becomes Now Playing.
When the schedule ends, the normal playlist returns.
Tips
If you're just getting started, remember this:
Content is what you show.
A Playlist organizes multiple pieces of Content.
A Screen is where it plays.
Assigned Content is what normally plays.
Now Playing is what's actually in control right now.
Schedules and other overrides can temporarily replace the default.
